May 8: 696 Weihai Lu Open Day
By Morgan Short, Apr 28th, 2010 | In Dining
Just got an email from artist / writer / excellent blogger Chris Gill alerting us to an upcoming Weihai Lu open day, coming up on May 8. If you are unfamiliar with Weihai Lu, it's a little enclave of gallery spaces and artists' studios in a group of converted industrial spaces. At the risk of being overly general, it exists as a reaction to the more commercial orientation of contemporary art in Shanghai, and is home to several Shanghai and international artists working at odds to the prevailing economic trends in the modern arts in this city.
They've constantly fought eviction over the past several years. Nefarious and shadowy entities are always looming in the wings to assume control of the area and develop it into something more directly profitable. As such, the community therein has often banded together to host open day events, opening up their studios, galleries, and work spaces to the Shanghai community to come in and have a look.
And they're doing it again on May 8. Keep that date set aside for that, and we'll offer more information for you when we have it. For now, though, this is what Chris is saying about it:
"There will be various types of performances, screenings and what have you on May 8, artists are sure to provide some beverages, and there are about 5 24 hour stores within around 30 yards stocked with beer. The live house may even be open. I'm trying to talk Lisa into doing one of her martini nights in my studio, but she is worried people might fall down the stairs. I guess if musicians want to perform they could busk, as there is a possibility power supplies may be touch and go."
There you go. More about Weihai Lu, lofty concerns, and base diversions over at Chris Gill's blog, shanghaieye.net. Bookmark that. It's one of the good ones.
