Need a new iPhone? Just plain want one? You’re in luck. What were the most expensive iPhones ever sold are now up to 1,000rmb cheaper
than they were last week, as long as you don’t try to buy them directly from the Apple
store. Major vendors on JD.com
, and Suning's shop on Tmall
have all cut the prices of the iPhone XS and iPhone XR as of Monday afternoon. An Apple store employee tried to wave us away from China’s digital marketplaces, warning the only way to be sure an iPhone is real is buying it direct from Apple, but the volume and ratings of the sellers offering discounts implies market forces have forced the price drop, not market fraudsters. Apple recently announced its first revenue warning in over a decade. It blamed a slow-down of the Chinese economy
– which accounts for 20% of its revenue – for its woes, rather than the rising price of its phones.
If you only trust the Apple stores, and already have an older model, you can upgrade at a discount
there too. If you’re still using an iPhone 7 Apple will knock almost 2,000rmb off the base-model iPhone XR. The “limited time offer” from Apple lasts until January 31.
