Toto Duan started the appointment-only club after working in fashion design in New York. While there, she got pulled into a company game because she was Chinese and found she actually loved it. The company would host games for people from all over the fashion industry, and Duan loved the community vibe of it all, which became her template for the Standard Nerds Club.
It's open to the public on Saturdays from 3-7pm, when you can play for free. The rest of the time, it's by appointment only, at 300rmb for two hours for two people, or 500rmb an hour for groups of 10 or more. Companies like Adidas do team-building here.
The indoor table is painted with a female form; outside, the table is set in a yard with benches and a mini-fridge full of beer. Standard Nerds Club product, from oil-painted ping pong paddles to printed illustrations by regular visitors, hang on the walls.
She’s also done a mini table that, when not in use, can hang on the wall like a work of art.
“Product design is my personal focus now”, Toto told me, “but without a community, these products have no life to them.”
