ShanghaiPRIDE Kicks Off Saturday Nite - Here's What's Good With That
By Jun 12, 2014 Community

For the sixth year in a row, Shanghai will beam rainbow bright under the colors of Shanghai Pride, and it all starts this Saturday. First, the bad news: the traditional Pride March is out. Yeah, that ain't happening. But there's plenty of other wonderful events to get involved with to show your ShanghaiPRIDE. Here's a rundown of the highlights:

Pride Week starts off here wih a Pride Run taking place at the Langham in Xintiandi from 9am to 11am. The Run is opened to a limited number who will also receive goodies and free entrance to the Pink BBQ starting right after at XTD Elevated. If you want to take part, a minimum donation of 100rmb is asked to contribute to an effort to raise HIV awareness in Sichuan. If you're not up for the Run, you can still go check out the sweaty participants and eat pink food (probably not really pink) for 200rmb from 11am-2pm.

Lots going on on Sunday. In the morning from 10am-12pm the US Consulate invites the United Nations Development Programme, the media, and the LGBT community to openly discuss issues relating to the Transgender community . Health, rights, and community building are the center of the discussion, with supporters coming to share their work and experience therein.

At night, is a completely different program over at M2. The club hosts the ShanghaiPride Opening with special “hot” guest, adult performer Peter Le. The organizers promise a “colorful night to remember”, but be there before 2am if you want to catch a glimpse of Mr Le. Cover will be free for a limited number of guests, but expect a charge of at least 100rmb after 1500 people show up.

Also starting on Sunday 15 until Friday 20 is the Chinese LGBT film festival. Featuring both short and feature length movies, the festival is being organized in association with several foreign consulates. There will be seventeen films screened with a main focus on local movies (replete with English subs). Entrance is free and venues change every night.

On June 18, you can show off your LGBT general knowledge at the 390 Trivia Night. Wiki-famous American drag queen/best personality of the year award winner, Sister Roma to host. Entrance is free and winners shall not go home empty handed. The event is on from 8pm-11pm.

Gay Pride Week ends on June 21 at the Sigma Film Club. The Club will host colorful performances and special DJs for the closing party. Cover is 60rmb with one drink. Event runs 9pm-2am.
