Cheap, perennially packed Yuyuan Lu breakfast joint, this place is so synonymous with all-day breakfast that they changed their official slogan to a plaintive "Not Just Brunch." Don't fall for it. Their breakfast platters, available every day from 11am-5pm come with omelette, potatoes, pancakes, waffles or french toast, sausages, bacon or ham, and efficient black coffee, all for around 70rmb.
The basic formula of Al's Diner is just American diner comfort food, minus most of the grease, plus around 20rmb. Among the meatloaf, the chili and the burgers, you'll find a five-entry list of breakfast bombs. Names are fairly self-explanatory: Two Eggs, Meat, Taters and Toast (60rmb), That Breakfast Sandwich Thing [They] Make (65rmb), etc. Or just give up on eating like a human today and break your fast with the stacked blueberry pancakes (78rmb).
Arashiyama Breakfast Company's small and gets pretty packed, for good reason. Ignore the fact they've added foie gras to the menu, and go straight for the 68rmb full breakfast, the bacon and eggs benedict, and the build-your-toast section. Prices can add up as you add chorizo and roasted cherry tomatoes onto your whole-wheat slice or baguette, but the eggs are fluffy and the bacon is cooked just right. It's all delightful. Also, consider their French Toast with berries (68rmb). Amazing.
The priciest entry on the list, but deserving of a mention for their buckwheat galettes, which are widely considered the best in Shanghai. If you're fed up with pancakes drowning in syrup and chewy bacon strips, and if you have a red note to burn on something breakfast-shaped, then give this one a go. Shaanxi Lu and Anfu Lu locations both do an excellent job, but for the crowds.
God bless this dumpster fire. Mr. Pancake House is a cut-rate Denny's (possible, yes!) kind of spot that spends less effort on breakfast than a single father of three holding down two jobs and a graveyard shift. And yet, it remains popular due to its low cost, high-quantity hangover crushers that go all day. Get the omelette combos, the breakfast burritos or the full size pancake stacks, all for like 50-60rmb on dianping. Under no circumstances touch the burgers, the ribs or the fried chicken.
