A Bunch of Chefs Are Gathering for a Rooftop FEAST This Weekend

Check it: Rain or shine, the people behind those Shanghai Supperclub dinners are throwing a rooftop party south of Xintiandi this Saturday and Sunday. Mmmmmhmmm. Basically, it's a two-day food pop-up running a full court press.

The lineup looks like a dream team: Austin Hu (Madison, Union), Jason Oakley (Coquille, Scarpetta), Jiayi and Wenyi Huang (Little Catch), Jenny Gao (formerly of Baoism; launching her new concept "Fly By Jing" at this event), Julio Gomez (Tomatito), Kelley Lee (Liquid Laundry, Tepito), Pol Garcia (El Patio), Maya Sittisuntorn + Mauro Pompili (Chikalicious), and Scott and Kim Melvin (Commune Social).

So this goes from noon to 8pm on Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are 80rmb per day at the door, or you can get 'em for 50rmb if you pre-pay by scanning the QR code on the flyer. That just gets you entry, with no food or drink tickets, but organizer Camden Hauge (Egg) says they'll be giving out some samples of beverages and she "would imagine the chefs might be throwing around bites as well."

Here's what some of the chefs are doing. Jenny Gao, she formerly of Baoism, is debuting her new concept "Fly by Jing", and it's "Nostalgic Sichuan street food inspired by the fly restaurants of Chengdu." (Hole-in-the-wall eateries said to "attract diners like flies".) She just came back from there, training under some master chefs. This weekend's offerings include some classics like sweet water noodles and zhong shuijiao."



As for Austin Hu, he says he's "all over the map. Sichuan spiced chicken fingers, truffled grilled five cheese, spicy tomato soup, and a Mediterranean lamb taco." Can't get mad at grilled cheese.

Kelley Lee, who's so busy cooking that she can't even attend her beer week boat cruise tonight, has a Liquid Laundry stand on Saturday and a Tepito stall on Sunday, plus Boxing Cat beers all weekend. The LL stand has their chef Simon Sunwoo doing a bahn mi, a Gangnam beef bulgogi bowl, and something called "Death By Waffle", which involves Gracie's Rocky Road ice cream and "all the fixins'". Then the Tepito stall has Edgar Hernandez doing shortribs tamales with cucumber jicama relish and more.

Jason Oakley is doing something called a "Takoyaki Dog". This is it. Damn, son.



Julio Gomez sounds pumped. "For tomorrow we gonna make four styles of tapas that represent Tomatito's style: simple, tasty, and funny. I'll make the skewers you like a lot, with chicken and lamb Morrocan style, our famous sexy prawn snack, txistorra bocata, and Supperclub ceviche."

Dishes are all between 30rmb and 80rmb. As for drinks, beers are around 35rmb and cocktails are 45rmb to 55rmb. Providing the jams are China Social Club, Yeti Out, Cody Allen, JDR, and HBD.

Rain worries are no worries (unless you're the event organizer -- that's stressful). Camden says there's indoor and outdoor areas, and tents instead of rain.
