End of an Era: Brad Turley Closed Hai by Goga Over the Weekend

TELL EVERYONE

Brad Turley came to Shanghai as a chef in 2003, and made a Turley-sized imprint on the city's dining scene almost immediately (239, Maneo, the opening chef of Maya, for the old-timers). Now, sixteen years later, his last venture in China, the terrace restaurant Hai by Goga seven floors above Yueyang Lu, is "taking a break" to figure out his next step. No plans to start a new, permanent restaurant again. For many of us, and for Turley himself, it's really the end of an era.

"Winters and summers are tough", Turley told me this morning, and so instead of pumping more money into Hai, he's letting it go. He's looking for someone to "cooperate" on the space, which is in a weird location up there in the Education Department's hotel, but has a great terrace.

He may revisit the space in September to see about doing a pop-up, but even that's up in the air. For now, he's going to back to San Francisco for a while to focus on health and exercise. Wansui, big guy, wansui.
