Western International School of Shanghai (WISS) was honored to host His Royal Highness, The Earl of Wessex, who recognized 16 gold award recipients across the city of Shanghai for the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award on Wednesday, June 6th. His Royal Highness also dedicated WISS's newly constructed Tiger Hall in a special ceremony. The Duke of Edinburgh International Award was established in 1956 by His Royal Highness Prince Philip with the guiding mission of inspiring and transforming the lives of young people in the United Kingdom and beyond. The award operates on a three-level basis, with greater levels of time commitment required to achieve:

These commitments culminate to year-long obligations to four aspects: volunteering, service to individuals and the community, physical activity (based on improvement), fostering the development of an academic or societal skill, and an expedition, which involves the planning and the execution of a journey that takes the candidate out of their comfort zone (this requires a residency, five days and four nights away from home pursuing professional or physical action).

With its mission to send brave, compassionate, internationally minded global citizens into the world, WISS has made the International Award an integral part of its student programming since 2014. This year, WISS was thrilled to recognize four outstanding grade 12 students who completed the rigorous and challenging requirements of the gold award. Together, they successfully completed their service, skill, and physical recreation requirements, as well as a final adventurous journey across Taiwan on a multi-day cycling trip.
