Nightclub Electric Circus
, which launches tonight
, is proving to be an interesting little music machine, churning out bookings of "underground" stars for their September roll-out. To wit, Dam Funk on September 20
! Dam Funk
! The king of modern funk, collaborator with Snoop Dogg, champion of the fat, electric bassline Dam Funk. He's been in Shanghai twice before. He's destroyed the dancefloor both times with records from Parliament, Metro Area, Theo Parrish and Chemise, and now he's going to be moving uptown (in spirit) for gig number three. And there's more.
The club, at the Edition hotel, is also bringing in electro bad-boy Jimmy Edgar on September 14, and DJ Maseo from seminal hip-hop group De La Soul on September 30. Taken together with the booking of riot grrl rap star Mykki Blanco on September 7, these sort of set the direction the club plans to go after the October grand opening: hip-hop, neo-soul and neo-funk, and house-techno-electro-ish. As with the Blanco party, which is already completely full, entry is free but reservation only, by following the club's WeChat (electriccircus).
