June 7 @ Mao Livehouse: Eels and Nouvelle Vague
By Morgan Short, May 17th, 2011 | In Nightlife
Big concert at Mao Livehouse on June 7. We already talked a bit about long-running American alt rock act Eels coming to town. That's indeed happening on June 7, but organizers have secured a real interested opening act -- a pretty big deal in their own right: French covers act, Nouvelle Vague. Nouvelle Vague's shtick is taking classic punk and new wave hits from the '70s and '80s -- songs from New Order, Yazoo, Echo & The Bunnymen and more -- and rendering them through the rubric of French chansons, which is a sort of France-specific loungey, folk, and pop style most commonly associated with Serge Gainsbourg and Édith Piaf, among others.
Anyways, Nouvelle Vague has garnered large acclaim for their quirky covers, and they've had songs used in a large amounts of TV and film: Robert Rodriguez's Planet Terror, Bad Pitt flick, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, The Accidental Husband, Elvis and Anabelle and TV shows Glee, LA Ink and more.
This one's organized by ICON -- they of last year's Peaches, Secret Machines, and Marnie Stern concerts. Pre-sale tickets are 200rmb versus 260rmb at the door, and these will be available on SmartTicket later this week. You're going to want to get pre-sale tickets if you want to go. Think a few French people in Shanghai are going to be digging this... not to mention Americans folks for Eels, and hip, hip Chinese people for both...
Here's Nouvelles Vagues on the web. And if you turn your VPN off, you can download some Nouvelle Vague songs right here.
