The Shelter Is Closing December 31
By Oct 5, 2016 Nightlife
We're still on holidays, but putting down the Sega Genesis controller to bring you some sad news. One of Shanghai's most iconic nightclubs (the most iconic nightclub?) is closing up for good on December 31. The day you never thought you'd see shall come to pass: The Shelter is closing down.

Full statement from the management after the jump.

The Shelter is closing.

We were and are privileged to be a part of this city as long as were. We were here. We were proud to be a part of of a few important moments here and there. We did some things.

We are closing down for a simple and boring reason: We couldn’t get our licensed renewed. Just to be up front. That’s what it is.

Some details: Our last night is New Year’s Eve, 31st December 2016. We have respect and gratitude for all the promoters that were and are here with us. We have respect for the artists who came through. We thank everyone who supported. Really.

We have 88 days. Fuck it. Thank you. Love you.

End of an era...

and the cycle of nightlife demise continues, smells like Y2K up in here. At least they told the truth and didn't go on and on. Probably for the best, once the Visa grading system is implemented Nov. 1 for A B and C a lot of the clubbers/nightlife vampirers are going to be shown the door.

No way this is absolutely devestating, really it is, for Shanghai. Good god, why could their license not be renewed? Shanghai seriously needs to look supporting the night life economy and culture. The Shelter was a cultural Supanova in Shanghai. This is a bigger loss for Shanghai than the loss of Fabric for London.
