Live Music

Inner Mongolian folk metal outfit Nine Treasures, a band that has come to define and represent the genre, is back with a mammoth nationwide tour, ready to strut trail-blazing sound - the hoarse 'deep in the bones' growl of singer Askhan, the ferocious mix of traditional instruments shredding alongside razor-sharp guitars and pummeling drums, and sprawling, galloping melodies sung in the band’s Mongolian language. Recalling everyone from Metallica to Korpiklaani, whilst forging its trail through the grasslands, Nine Treasures is one of the metal scene’s most essential acts. With Friday night already sold out, don’t expect tickets to last much longer.

Qinghai-based instrumental rock troupe Tation, known for its exploratory sound that blends Chinese traditional folk, Tibetan, and Mongolian music, and experimental music into the bedrock of post-rock, is just one of the great mystifying acts tonight at Yuyintang Park. Grandiose yet delicate at once, firm yet limber, Tation is apt at maneuvering across the genre’s many facets. They’ll be joined by the Lanzhou experimental rock outfit Buguzhi - whose cold, dark, and alluring blend of industrial, experimental, and classic rock is as chaotic as it is mesmerizing - a Hitchcockian thriller back way of Song Dynasty opera. If that wasn’t enough, saxophonist and experimental music legend Li Zenghui, is always a treat to see cut loose on stage. Sleeper gig of the week.

trigger hosts the China premiere of ‘Noise is Serious Shit’ - a new documentary that looks at the rise of noisemakers in the Indonesian city of Yogyakarta - where the annual Jogja Noise Bombing Fest is held. To celebrate the screening, the Shanghai noise music safe haven will invite some of its regulars to tear shit up and make some audial chaos including Torturing Nurse, Shuride, Zhu Songjie, and RHYTHMICSHIT - the new noisecore duo that’s all the rage these days.

Rock and roll at its most combustible, the latest edition of the 8 Hour Rock n’ Roll Club joins forces with LiveChinaMusic to pay tribute to the cult underground album “dumpster” curated by JinBo (the bassist for Brian Failure) for a visceral evening of music that’ll turn up the heat, and keep those flames roaring. Fuel for the evening comes in the form of Beijing bass-drums duo Basement Queen, adding layer upon layer of fuzz as they bask in their psych-laced twist on stoner and hard rock. Returning from hibernation, Nantong’s AIRSEX return with their feverish fireball of spirited new wave and jagged street punk. Further propellent from Shanghai courtesy of Chimera Cult and their riff-filled boiling over cauldron of punk, hardcore, and metal in all its glory, and Navel, not afraid to let their psych-infused mania run rampant. Expect tons of more surprises.

Afterwards - a punk-filled DJ afterparty with the organizers taking turns behind the decks. Expect a ton more surprises including CD giveaways, drinking competitions, and just good ol’ fashion debauchery.

Alt indie pop outfit Quark, from Xi’an, has been floating around since 2010, steadily building their fanbase with their tuneful, heart-warming, Beatles-esque indie pop that never dips too far into shtick or schmaltz. In fact, it’s brimming with the kind of kinetic magnetism often reserved for emo rockers, and its deft instrumentation packs a punch not often heard in acts of its ilk. Sugar and Spice

C's

Celebrate your St Paddies day with an alt-metal rock psychedelic free ticket show provided by a band named Syren. I feel that is enough said but to add to it there is an “indie pop” band by the name of Jen’s Curfew also that looks to balance the rawness of the other for a more jolly vibe of a night. Hop to it and wear a green shirt.
