Shanghai Weekender: So Much Good Stuff Going On This Weekend ...

Hey it's the F1 Weekend in Shanghai. You can go to all these things this weekend!

Live Music

Three-piece psych rock outfit Sweet Sister Session, out of Wuhan - a cesspool of 1960s acid rock filtered through the likes of 13th Floor Elevators, Suicide and Spacemen3- are as direct as they come. Dabbed in layers of electronic transistor organ, noise feedback, muddy guitar riffs, and distorted vocals, it’s a wavelength as pure as the static from your vintage television set. Space psychedelic music made with impeccable craft and a steady hand - Sweet Sister Session captures that perpetual descent into music-induced psychosis with glee. The band is on tour in support of their debut LP Filthy Floating Fantasies, with Shanghai’s own psych-rock trio Domino Trigger opening.

The 5,6,7,8's are a female garage punk band founded in 1986 by Yoshiko Fujiyama in Tokyo, Japan. The band is known for its style and energy, and is "a cross between the B-52s and The Cramps," though their influences go even deeper - touching on everything from The Ronettes to the Ramones. The band became a global sensation after appearing in the famous Kill Bill sequence, which captured their fiery 1950s rock and roll in glorious Technicolor. Hosted by Trash-A-Go-Go with support Shanghai’s own Round Eye, expect a hell of a good time.

One of my fondest memories of a Slovenian music festival I went to back in 2018 was discovering the St. Petersburg post-punk outfit SHORTPARIS. Combining irrational, spastic dance grooves with theatrical performances and exalted vocals in Russian, French, and English, the collective is essentially a cross between audiovisual theatre, techno rave, and punk rock swagger - one that seems to move to a highly engrossing tribalistic, machine-like pulse. The band has been causing a stir over the past couple of years, and their appearances at festivals have become the talk of legend here in China. Expect a live performance unlike anything else.

A new generation of indie rockers has been causing a stir in Zhejiang and beyond over the past year - a collective of bands swinging for the fences and charting their own path. From the reverb-heavy shoegaze-laced pop of Wuhu’s Opposite, to the sax-led post-punk theatrics of Jiaxing’s 0311, to the more new wave-inflicted Nantong act Blue Liquid, to finally, Acid Room, out of Suzhou, whose combustible mix of grunge, post-punk, and noise rock has been lighting up stages across town - its a hot-blooded, rip-roaring evening of rock and roll over at NEO. Sleeper gig of the week.

Math rock music fans converge on Yuyintang Park with a sexy, sonically stimulating trio of math rock bands who approach the genre in distinctive ways. Diels-Alder, the math rock-inflicted, emo rockers bring conviction to their music - a testament to both their crisp songwriting - which appeals to the band’s pop sensibilities - and their elastic, playful musicality. Meanwhile, Shaoxing math rock act Chocolate Factory brings a more steady hand to their smooth yet invigorating sound. And representing Shanghai are sincere up-and-comers Zhuyouhui and Da Seven, who bring an underground lounge room jazz approach to math rock - turning what could have easily been mellow jams sessions into elaborate off-kilter arrangements chock full of offbeat time signatures and robust musicality that’ll have your head spinning. Yeah, time to geek out with our hearts out.

Concerts

The WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne (German: WDR Sinfonieorchester) is a German radio orchestra based in Cologne, Germany. Since its founding more than 70 years ago, the WDR Sinfonieorchester has established itself as an internationally respected ensemble. The orchestra is currently under direction of the famous and Grammy-winning conductor Cristian Măcelaru. From April 17 to 18, the Orchestra will continue to amaze the audience in Shanghai since their last visit in 2015. Under the baton of Măcelaru, they will present two concerts in a row, performing the complete Brahms symphony.

A night dedicated to Alec Haavik’s original music from his early NYC and Shanghai days. Including music developed during his famous “Friction” bands which performed every Thursday at JZ Club from 2006 - 2012. Some of these tunes, such as The 42 Bus, Cold Rainy Night and Cruise Control, are so familiar to have already become classics. Others from the “Classic Haavik” repertoire are more well-known to the true Friction devotees, such as the operatic fusion opus Step Into the Red Ball (…and You Will Expand!), as well as the complex 35-beat meter tour de force The Mind is A Time Machine. Haavik is delighted to have a chance to bring together two of the original Friction musicians, Lawrence Ku and Fred Grenade, as well as the most recent Friction artist, Yu Guo Jun.

Platform K+K Vienna is an independent chamber orchestra with young energy, founded by Kirill Kobantschenko, a violinist of the Vienna Philharmonic and the Vienna State Opera. The main members are also musicians from the Vienna Philharmonic or the orchestra of the Vienna State Opera. The orchestra is active in Europe and has held concerts in the Golden Hall of Vienna many times. While paying tribute to the Viennese music tradition, the works performed by the orchestra are diverse in style and full of creativity. They will perform at the Oriental Art Center on April 19 evening with special guest accordion player Christian Bakanic.

Here’s a dark and heavy one for those who like to dip into the deep end of the pool. This Saturday, Heim invites Spekki Webu to drop his deep jungle rave sound. Influenced by the gabber scene, Spekki Webu is a dark raver’s dream. Expect tribal techno out of Goa beach-type vibes.

Arts

“Facing the Rigidity of Forms" covers almost thirty years of the career of one of Spain's most prominent artists, Pilar Albaracín, including her most emblematic videos and performances, as well as a selection of photographs and texts documenting her working processes. The exhibition offers the public a multifaceted view of Spanish society and culture. Concerned with preserving traditions and codes, but from a contemporary perspective, the Sevillian artist addresses, not without irony, the stereotypes of national identity, with a particular focus on the contemporary and historical experiences of Andalusian women and the traditions rooted in folklore.

The classic collection from the Uffizi Galleries in Italy, featuring the world-renowned masterpiece "Flora," debuts in mainland China. This exhibition showcases 49 masterpieces from Venetian Painting, including works by Venetian masters such as "Flora," "Venus and Cupid with Dog and Partridge," and "Portrait of Vincenzo Mosti," as well as 8 exquisite oil paintings by Titian. In addition to the "Big Three" of the Venetian Painting—Titian, Veronese, and Tintoretto—there are also works by other Venetian masters such as Giorgione and Lotto.
