About

Video Installation by Ellen Zweig (USA). HEAP is a large scale video and audio installation made specifically for DDM. Using large projections and small flat-screen monitors, images of an invented China shot in '00 and '05. HEAP is a virtual passage through China - woven sonorous and visual moments, ephemeral imagery, voices off-screen speaking cryptic, poetic text. Opening will be held on April 8th, at 7:30pm.

Video and installation artist, performer, poet, and critic, Ellen Zweig has wandered China during a time of unprecedented change. Her lens and voice have captured an era where socio-economic reform, savage capitalism and market-centric initiatives have cleft a rift in the resurgence and excavation of traditions long since dormant. HEAP in time and out of time, witness, obscure and often mysterious, a compilation of the mundane and tragic, comic and revealing. A signature work of one of the foremost experimental video artists and a vital drama of the subjective eye in contest with the absurd machinations of the post-Mao era. A montage par excellence reminding us of humanity, misinterpretation, a trans-experience that laughs at cultural iconography.

Workshop (Lecture topic: "Act of watching") on April 15th, at 2pm .
