Written by German playwright Frank Wedekind, Spring Awakening documents the tale of a group of teenagers growing up in an oppressed society during the 1890s, finding ways to fight back and discovering who they truly are. The musical production of the original play has won three Tony Awards for Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score, Best Orchestrations and a Drama Desk Award Outstanding Lyrics. Songwriter Steven Sater and composer Duncan Sheik mixed the theme of resistance with contemporary musical elements and a lot of rock and roll, to express the clash between youth and authority. Staffed with casts from Broadway, London’s West End, and China, the new production of Spring Awakening in Shanghai will return to Shanghai Culture Square with exciting new adaptations.
