Founded in 2004 by Yi Liqi, with members from Inner Mongolia, Qinghai and other north western provinces, Beijing-based Hanggai is one of the most welcomed Chinese bands on international stages. In the 15 years since its establishment, the band has traveled to more than 60 countries and performed more than 500 live shows, including at the prestigious Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, The Royal Opera House as well as countless music festivals all over the globe. Hanggai in ancient Mongolian means "a world under the blue sky with enchanting grasslands." The band explores their Mongolian lineage with folk music, and at the same time integrates rock and roll. Hanggai uses traditional Mongolian instruments such as Taubsour and Matouqin to play alongside with drums and electric guitars, creating original pieces with a distinctive characteristic.
