About

Zhang Xiaogang, a prominent figure in Chinese contemporary art, opened his largest solo exhibition in three years on March 4, 2023, at the Long Museum (West Bund). The exhibition, titled "Mayflies," features over 80 works including oil paintings on paper and canvas, installations, and drawing manuscripts. Zhang's surrealist paintings from the past three years are on display, reflecting on the fleeting nature of life as indicated by the exhibition's title.

Zhang gained worldwide attention in 1995 with his "Big Family" series of paintings, which caused a sensation at the 46th Venice Biennale. His painting "Bloodline: 'Big Family No. 2'" sold for a record-breaking 83 million Hong Kong dollars at a Christie's auction in 2022. That same year, his work "New Year's Eve" was added to the permanent collection of the Tate Modern.
