Memphis, a design group hailing from Italy, emerged in the 1980s under the leadership of Ettore Sottsass. They epitomized the new wave of Italian design, representing the internationally acclaimed post-modern design movement. The exhibition, a collaboration between Memphis Milano, Shanghai Modern Art Museum, and Global Design Distribution, stands as the largest showcase in Memphis's history. Featuring nearly 200 iconic furniture pieces and objects introduced by Memphis between 1981 and 1985, the exhibition offers a glimpse into their remarkable repertoire. Adding to the exhibition's allure, renowned interdisciplinary artist and illustrator Massimo Giacon, based in Milan, was invited by Memphis to create a captivating series of dynamic works specifically for the event. In a special tribute, the exhibition honors the early enthusiasts and collectors of Memphis, including the legendary figures David Bowie and Karl Lagerfeld. This exhibition delves into the expressive nature and cultural possibilities inherent in the design itself.
