About

As a prominent figure in the "New Paris School," Georges Mathieu is recognized as one of the most original and influential French painters of his generation. In 1946, he established the "Lyrical Abstraction" movement and remained a dedicated proponent of this style. Mathieu is also one of the few European painters who significantly impacted New York's Abstract Expressionism. His public painting performances anticipated the emergence of performance art and have quietly influenced the development of graffiti as a form of urban expression since the 1970s.
