About

Huang Junshi is a respected art connoisseur and calligrapher, also known as Shantao. Born in 1934 in Taishan, Guangdong Province, China, he has studied in Hong Kong, Japan, and the United States. In the 1980s, he established the Chinese Painting and Calligraphy Department at Christie’s Auction House, where he served as head for several years, and later worked as a senior consultant for Sotheby’s. Huang has held solo calligraphy exhibitions at several major institutions, including the National Art Museum of China, the Shanghai Art Museum, the Hong Kong City Hall, and the Guangdong Provincial Museum. His calligraphy is influenced by the Jin and Tang dynasties and is known for its cursive and small regular scripts. In painting, he studied under Li Yanshan and focused on bamboo and landscapes. To mark his 90th birthday, the Long Museum (West Bund) is hosting a retrospective exhibition featuring over 100 of his works, including calligraphy, paintings, and inscriptions on ancient artworks. The exhibition provides insight into his artistic style and influences.
