About

At the start of the 20th century, the May Fourth New Culture Movement marked a period of cultural exchange between China and the West. Chinese students traveled to Europe to study Western painting, while artists in China worked to revive traditional styles from the Jin, Tang, Song, and Yuan dynasties, along with literati painting. These two artistic movements influenced each other, contributing to the development of modern Chinese painting. The exhibition is organized into nine sections, presenting 89 works from the Musée Cernuschi collection by 36 artists, including Qi Baishi, Xu Beihong, Zhang Daqian, Lin Fengmian, Fu Baoshi, Pu Ru, Xie Zhiliu, Zao Wou-Ki, Sanyu, and Pan Yuliang. Alongside archival footage, the exhibition explores the evolution of Chinese painting in the 20th century—from early modernization efforts at the turn of the century, through the 1920s and 1930s wave of students studying in France, wartime art production in the West, and the postwar return of Chinese artists to the international stage, concluding with contemporary ink painting. This exhibition also marks the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and France and reflects on the development of traditional Chinese painting during this time.
