The "New Oriental Chinese Music Scene" is back this summer with 140 performances lighting up the city. A mix of Chinese music, lighting, and stage design comes together for a poetic and modern take on traditional culture — expect ethereal vibes, bold rhythms, and a fully immersive experience.

From July 17 to July 31, 2025, the Shanghai Grand Theatre Art Center, in collaboration with the Shanghai Chinese Orchestra and Cadillac Shanghai Concert Hall, will present the sixth edition of New Oriental Chinese Music Scene. This year’s program features 140 performances, bringing a vibrant cultural highlight to Shanghai’s summer calendar.

Blending traditional Chinese music with modern lighting and immersive stage design, the production weaves together lyrical aesthetics and contemporary sensibilities. Nine original Shanghai-style compositions—ranging from ethereal and graceful to bold and expansive—will challenge conventional auditory experiences. Meanwhile, innovative visuals extend beyond the traditional proscenium, transforming the entire theater into a dynamic, multi-sensory space.

By merging sound, light, and spatial design, the performance reimagines Chinese music for the digital age. Audiences will be drawn into an evocative artistic journey, one that taps into cultural heritage while exploring the boundless creativity of the city.

A must-see for traditional arts enthusiasts and modern performance lovers alike, New Oriental Chinese Music Scene promises a striking addition to Shanghai’s summer arts scene.
