Maijishan Grottoes opens at Shanghai Powerlong Museum, presenting the most comprehensive showcase of Maijishan grotto culture ever seen in Shanghai. Known as one of China’s “Four Great Grottoes” alongside Dunhuang, Yungang, and Longmen, Maijishan is celebrated as an “Eastern Sculpture Gallery” for its remarkably preserved clay statues. This large-scale exhibition features 137 historical works—including sculptures, murals, inscriptions, grotto replicas, and rare clay relics, with 12 designated as first-class cultural artifacts—alongside 37 contemporary pieces from over 30 artists who reinterpret grotto art through a modern lens. Spread across six sections, the exhibition creates a dialogue between ancient craftsmanship and contemporary expression, tracing 1,600 years of artistic heritage while exploring how the grotto’s spirit continues to inspire creativity today.
