A hit family dance-theatre show from the UK is coming to Shanghai! Unwrapping the Gift is part of the “Performing Arts World · 2025 Shanghai International Children’s Theatre Festival,” bringing a heartwarming and interactive experience for kids and parents alike. Created by Natasha Gilmore of Barrowland Ballet — the Scottish choreographer behind Pine Tree, Elf and Me and Same, Same but Different — this show celebrates imagination, play, and what it really means to give. Recommended for ages 18 months to 5 years old.

Every parent has felt it — the excitement of watching their child’s eyes light up when they open a gift, mixed with a tiny worry: “Will they really like it?”

Unwrapping the Gift begins with that moment — when the wrapping paper comes off, and the magic begins.

Without relying on sound effects or flashy lights, this interactive dance-theatre piece asks a simple question: What makes real joy? The answer isn’t hidden in expensive toys or smart gadgets, but in the laughter, play, and imagination we share.

In the story, a child eagerly opens a present only to find the toy car has no batteries. Disappointment flickers — but soon, through movement and creativity, everyday objects transform into a world of wonder. A cardboard box becomes a house, a boat, a companion. Paper turns into snow. The stage fills with rhythm, laughter, and pure delight.

Created by Barrowland Ballet, one of Scotland’s leading contemporary dance companies, the show is directed and choreographed by Natasha Gilmore — a mother of three and a master at creating performances that speak to both children and adults. Her guiding belief: never underestimate a child’s intelligence — they understand dance even better than adults do.

This 40-minute performance has toured from Edinburgh to Shanghai, earning praise for its warmth and inventiveness:

The highlight comes at the end — when all the young audience members are invited on stage to join the performers, dancing among cardboard castles and snowflakes.

Because in the end, the real gift isn’t the toy inside the box — it’s the time we spend playing together.
