Shanghai Museum’s new exhibition has opened at its People’s Square location. Co-organized with the Tokyo National Museum to mark the Year of Cultural Exchange among China, Japan, and Korea, the show presents 127 exquisite lacquerware works from both countries—112 from Japan and 15 from China—many of which are rarely seen in China today. Highlights include intricately carved red and black lacquer boxes, gilded and inlaid pieces, and shimmering mother-of-pearl designs that trace the evolution of Chinese lacquer art and its influence across East Asia. The exhibition is divided into six sections exploring craftsmanship, aesthetics, and cross-cultural legacy. It runs through November 23, 2025, with some rare pieces shown in rotation.
