On The Up Grade is a contemporary dance theatre work by Guangzhou-based Ergao Dance Production Group. Inspired by the global journey of vibrant batik fabrics, the performance combines contemporary dance, traditional Chinese folk dance, African dance, and martial arts elements including Hung Ga and nunchaku.

About the Performance

On The Up Grade takes inspiration from the journey of African batik fabrics as they travel across different cultures and regions, including India, Indonesia, the Netherlands, Africa, and China.

Over hundreds of years, fabric, dyes, and patterns have been continuously transformed by different people and communities. The work explores this movement and transformation through dance, imagining how a piece of fabric may continue its journey through different places, lives, and identities.

Following previous works Let’s Dance (2018) and Butterfly Island (2023), Guangzhou choreographer Ergao (He Qiwo) continues his exploration of local communities through a dance theatre work that blends playful aesthetics with cultural imagination.

The performance transforms the theatre into a colorful “future pedestrian street” and “future world shop”, where batik fabrics become part of the stage environment and movement. Dancers combine African dance, traditional Chinese folk dance, contemporary dance, and martial arts forms such as Hung Ga and nunchaku to create a lively celebration of life and rebirth.

Ergao Dance Production Group is led by Guangzhou-based choreographer Ergao (He Qiwo).

Cao Fei

Renowned video and multimedia artist Cao Fei serves as artistic consultant for this dance theatre production, marking their first collaboration in this role.

On The Up Grade offers a visual and physical performance experience built around color, movement, and cultural exchange. Audiences can expect a blend of different dance forms and stage imagery, from contemporary movement to traditional and martial arts influences.

The performance has no dialogue and runs for approximately 70–80 minutes. It is recommended for audiences aged 12 and above.
