The German original musical concert version of Ludwig II: The Return of the King returns to Shanghai in 2026 with an all-star cast. The production tells the story of Ludwig II, the “Fairytale King” of Bavaria, combining musical theatre with orchestral arrangements inspired by classical music.

Ludwig II: The Return of the King tells the story of Ludwig II, the “Fairytale King” of Bavaria.

Ludwig II became king at the age of 18. Throughout his life, he supported peace and the arts, but his ideas also brought criticism from political powers and nobles. Inspired by Wagner’s operas, he built Neuschwanstein Castle in pursuit of his dreamlike world.

As opposition against him grew, political opponents eventually used a medical diagnosis from Dr. Bernhard von Gudden as a reason to remove and confine him. During a walk outside, Ludwig II and the doctor both died under mysterious circumstances, leaving behind a historical mystery. His Neuschwanstein Castle and the fairytale world he created continue to be remembered.

The Shanghai return performance will feature new arrangements, expanded ensemble roles, and orchestral accompaniment to recreate the atmosphere of German musical theatre.
