The exhibition at Shanghai Museum traces over a century of Shanghai-style qipao, exploring how this iconic dress evolved alongside the city’s social and cultural shifts. Around 300 pieces are on display, including items from private collectors such as Ms. Beisha and Mr. Zhang Xinzhe, as well as museum and international fashion archives from brands like Dior, Chanel, and Gucci. The show highlights changing silhouettes, fabrics, and decorative details from the 1910s through the late 20th century, situating qipao within both local fashion trends and global influences. Mannequins of varied body types are used to reflect the dress’s adaptability and celebrate the diversity of women’s forms over time.
