Inside the former Lagena Primary School building in Xintiandi, Shanghai artist Qiu Jia’s new solo exhibition explores a surprisingly simple question: how do objects stand up? Using old table legs, wooden beams, plaster, and found materials, Qiu creates sculptural installations that balance somewhere between construction, furniture, and temporary structures. Rather than fully transforming materials, the artist works with their existing histories, weight, and physical presence, allowing different objects to support and constrain one another in unstable but carefully held arrangements. The exhibition takes place on the fourth floor of the historic 1930s school building, adding another layer to the show’s atmosphere of memory, function, and quiet tension.
