Johnny Depp’s “Figures of the Fringe” exhibition is coming to Shanghai, offering a look at the actor’s lesser-known side as a visual artist. Known worldwide for his iconic film roles, Depp has also maintained a long-term creative practice across painting, music and writing. Curated by international curator Shai Baitel, the exhibition brings together his paintings, texts, videos, installations and immersive experiences, exploring recurring themes in his work including identity, memory, emotion, masks and alter egos. Rather than focusing on his on-screen persona, the exhibition presents a more personal and introspective side of Depp’s artistic expression, filled with elements of humor, surrealism, romance and a fascination with the “outsider” figures that have often appeared throughout his creative journey.
