Nightmares on Wax brings his DJ set to Shanghai’s VAS Ear, with guest DJ ZHUO joining the night’s lineup. Known for his long-running downtempo sound shaped by dub reggae, hip-hop, soul, and jazz influences, George Evelyn has been creating music under the Nightmares on Wax name for over three decades.

Nightmares on Wax is the long-running project of George Evelyn, a UK electronic musician known for his relaxed, flowing downtempo style. His music draws from dub reggae, hip-hop, soul, and jazz, with loose rhythms, deep bass lines, fragmented samples, and spacious arrangements that create a sound somewhere between the dancefloor and a laid-back listening environment.

In 2026, George Evelyn revisited his 2006 album In a Space Outta Sound with producer Adrian Sherwood, transforming it into a dub reconstruction titled In a Space Outta Dub. The project reworked eight of the original twelve tracks, creating new textures while keeping the connection between past recordings and new interpretations.
Nightmares on Wax has been part of Warp’s roster for more than 30 years, developing a sound built around space, rhythm, and atmosphere rather than following fast-changing trends.

Nightmares on Wax is the long-running music project of George Evelyn. He has been active for more than three decades, with a sound influenced by dub reggae and hip-hop. His album Smokers Delight was ranked No. 15 among the greatest trip-hop albums of all time by Fact.
ZHUO is the curator of the BPM 100 music event “mànmànlái” and one half of the daytime party “Qi Ding Shen Xian”. Her sets move between downtempo and deep organic techno, combining electronic sounds with folk elements and unusual textures.
For listeners interested in downtempo, dub, and slower electronic rhythms, this is a chance to experience Nightmares on Wax’s sound in a live club setting. With ZHUO opening the night and Nightmares on Wax taking over later, the event brings together two different approaches to atmospheric electronic music.
