This exhibition brings together two pioneers of fiber art at West Bund Museum from April 17 to August 2, marking the first China solo presentation for Sheila Hicks alongside a comprehensive survey of Chinese artist Shi Hui. The exhibition features nearly 100 works spanning decades, including five pieces from the collection of Centre Pompidou, and traces how fiber moved from decorative craft into a contemporary artistic language. Hicks’ practice ranges from small hand-woven “minimes” to large-scale suspended installations that reshape architectural space, while Shi Hui works with paper, cotton, bamboo, and natural materials to explore time, memory, and bodily perception. The show extends beyond Gallery 3 into public areas of the museum, with large installations visitors can walk through, turning the exhibition into something less about images on walls and more about moving through texture, scale, and material — particularly appealing to those interested in installation art, tactile works, or a slower, more spatial museum experience.
