Description

Anna Netrebko returns to Shanghai three years after her last appearance with two gala performances featuring opera highlights. Joining her are baritone Artur Ruciński, bass Alexander Köpeczi, conductor Michelangelo Mazza, and the Jiaxing Tide Philharmonic Orchestra for an evening of solo arias, ensembles, and orchestral works.

About the Performance

Anna Netrebko returns to Shanghai after her 2023 recital with a larger-scale opera gala featuring orchestra and guest vocalists. Rather than a piano recital, these concerts bring together solo arias, ensembles, and orchestral accompaniment.

The first half focuses on Giuseppe Verdi's operas, featuring roles including Gilda from Rigoletto, Leonora from Il Trovatore, Elisabetta from Don Carlo, Amelia from Un Ballo in Maschera, alongside selections connected to her acclaimed portrayal of Violetta in La Traviata.

The second half turns to Donizetti's Anna Bolena and Lucia di Lammermoor, before concluding with the final scene from Act III of Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin, featuring Tatiana.

Programs differ between the October 13 and October 15 performances. Please refer to the official program for each date.

Performers

Anna Netrebko — Soprano

One of today's leading soprano voices, Anna Netrebko has spent more than three decades performing on major international opera stages. She has received three Grammy nominations, was named Female Singer of the Year at the Classical BRIT Awards, and performed at the opening ceremony of the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics.

Artur Ruciński — Baritone

Artur Ruciński is regarded as one of today's leading Verdi baritones. He regularly performs at major venues including the Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera House, Opéra Bastille, and the Salzburg Festival.

Alexander Köpeczi — Bass

A recipient of the Herbert von Karajan Award, Alexander Köpeczi has quickly established himself on international opera stages, appearing at houses including the Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera House, and Bavarian State Opera.

Michelangelo Mazza — Conductor

Michelangelo Mazza comes from a musical family and studied with violinist Salvatore Accardo. A former concertmaster who later became a conductor, he regularly leads opera and symphonic performances internationally and has collaborated with Anna Netrebko on multiple projects.

Jiaxing Tide Philharmonic Orchestra

Program

Why Go

This concert offers the chance to hear Anna Netrebko in a full-scale opera gala rather than a recital, joined by an international cast and orchestra. With music drawn from Verdi, Donizetti, and Tchaikovsky, the program brings together some of opera's best-known repertoire while showcasing roles closely associated with Netrebko's career. For audiences who missed her previous Shanghai appearance—or want to experience her with orchestra and guest singers—these performances mark her return to the city after three years.
