Description

Balinese guitarist and composer I Wayan Balawan leads a quartet of Indonesian musicians in a live performance blending traditional gamelan influences with jazz, rock, and electronic elements. Joining him are drummer Gusti Agung Isa Abhijana, keyboardist Gede Yudis, and bassist Ketut Tarmadi. Together they present a cross-cultural sound shaped by Balinese musical traditions and contemporary improvisation.


About the Performance

This concert brings together four musicians from Bali, Indonesia, presenting music that combines Balinese traditional elements with contemporary styles. The ensemble blends gamelan-influenced rhythms and melodies with jazz improvisation, rock energy, and electronic textures.

Led by guitarist and vocalist I Wayan Balawan, the quartet explores a sound that connects Indonesian musical heritage with modern performance practices. Through instrumental interplay and improvisation, the performance moves between traditional influences and contemporary world music.


Performers

Guitar / Vocals – I Wayan Balawan

I Wayan Balawan is a guitarist, singer, and composer from Bali known for his distinctive eight-finger tapping technique and the use of a custom double-neck guitar. His career began with the group Batuan Ethnic Fusion, where he developed a style combining Balinese musical traditions with jazz and fusion.

He has released several albums including Globalism, Magic Fingers, and See You Sometimes, and has performed at festivals across Asia, Europe, and the United States. In 2023 he appeared at the Tong Tong Festival in the Netherlands, toured India between 2024 and 2025, and participated in the International Guitar Night tour in Germany in 2024, performing in 18 cities.

Drums – Gusti Agung Isa Abhijana

Born in Denpasar, Bali in 1987, Gusti Agung Isa Abhijana began his professional music career in 2010. Since 2015 he has performed with Ivy Band, and in 2021 he joined Balawan and the Batuan Ethnic Fusion group.

His drumming incorporates a fusion approach influenced by jazz, pop, rock, and traditional music. Known for his dynamic playing style and adaptability, he has collaborated on numerous projects and performances.

Keyboard – Gede Yudis
Gede Yudis, whose full name is I Gede Raditya Yudhistira, is a pianist, keyboardist, and music educator from Bali. He currently teaches music studies at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts in Bali.

As a solo artist he has released two albums with global streaming numbers exceeding one million plays. Internationally, he has toured across Europe, Asia, and Latin America as a member of Balawan & Batuan Ethnic Fusion and is also active in the Indonesian band Nosstress. His work combines contemporary harmony, improvisation, and Indonesian traditional music elements.

Bass – Ketut Tarmadi
Ketut Tarmadi is an experienced bassist from Denpasar, Bali, born in 1977. Since 2003 he has been a core member of the Balawan and Batuan Ethnic Fusion ensemble.

Known for his steady and expressive bass playing, he provides the rhythmic and harmonic foundation for the group’s performances and contributes to the ensemble’s distinctive fusion of modern and Balinese musical styles.
