Purpose of this job

The Early Childhood Education Teacher works in a Co-Teaching relationship to provide an education for the ‘whole child’ based on the Yew Chung Educational Philosophy and Objectives. Through developmentally appropriate practice and an inquiry learning approach in a bilingual and multicultural learning environment, the Co-teachers develop a curriculum that supports lifelong learning dispositions through exploration, discovery, and active involvement of the children in their learning.

Key Responsibilities

Implementation of the Daily Learning Programme with the Co-Teacher

  • Understand and incorporate the Yew Chung Philosophy, Values, and Objectives to nurture the development and learning of the child.
  • Ensure the program reflects the vision of Yew Chung ECE by referring to the 12 values, 'Yew Chung Approach to Early Childhood Education', 'ECE Programme Handbook', 'Pro-social Approach', 'Individual Student Continuum', 'Development Matters in the Early Years Foundation Stage' and 'Intimate and Personal Care Policy and Procedures', etc.
  • Create a responsive and caring classroom learning environment with intentional learning centers for young children.
  • Based on children’s interests, plan, implement, document, and evaluate developmentally appropriate daily learning opportunities and experiences both indoors and outdoors.
  • Prepare and organise materials and resources for learning.
  • Observe the strengths and concerns of individual children, reflect upon what has been observed as co-teachers, and respond through the planning of appropriate opportunities for development and learning.
  • Establishment of Daily Schedule, Routines, and Transitions with Co-Teacher.
  • Enable children and parents to understand the daily schedule and routines.
  • Support children and parents with positive behavioral expectations in the learning environment both indoors and outdoors.
  • Be flexible and responsive to children’s emerging interests.
  • Provide positive guidance on the behavior of individual children based on a Pro-social Approach.
  • Encourage independence and self-help skills.
  • Ensure the safety of every child, remain alert to potential hazards that endanger their safety, and report and handle them in a timely manner.

Working with families

  • Make families feel welcome.
  • Be able to explain the different aspects of the program to families.
  • Establish a rapport with parents and families on time.
  • Ensure information is received from parents about a child’s development and interests.
  • Involve the expertise of parents and families, including their cultural beliefs, practices, and professional knowledge, to enrich children’s learning.
  • Be resourceful and supportive of parenting issues when appropriate.
  • Keep ongoing communication with families through Emails, Seesaw posts, reports, phone calls, PTC, PIE, daily face-to-face conversation, etc.
  • Make sure that information learned about the child from parents and family members is shared with your co-teacher
  • Participate in school-related marketing activities and other events.

Maintain a general professionalism as an ITLP teacher

  • Adopt a positive attitude towards school life and work.
  • Always meet deadlines for administrative work, i.e., Seesaw posts, Portfolios, Learning journey, Planning with Reflection, Reports, etc.
  • Always maintain a relationship with children that is fair and unbiased.
  • Keep the confidentiality of children, families, and colleagues’ personal information.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with parents and families.
  • Always conduct yourself in a professional manner about dress, conduct, etc.

Maintain and Further Professional Knowledge, Attitudes, and Competencies

  • Keep abreast of the current practices and theories in early childhood education.
  • Always seek self-improvement through ongoing professional development, and be willing to take risks to try new ideas.
  • Accept other teachers’ good ideas and share your own.
  • Participate in ongoing professional reflection and sharing.
  • Show interest in the wider ECE world.
  • Join the ECE 12 Values course and be certificated by the Foundation to be a YCYW ECE teacher.

Support and Participate in the Initiatives of the School Community

  • Establish Positive Relationships with everyone in the ECE and YCIS community including the Leadership, the co-teacher, and other colleagues, Ayis, drivers, etc.
  • Volunteer in various ad-hoc committees.
  • Be actively responsible and committed to school-wide events based on the school calendar.

Additional - Perform any tasks within the role of a teacher as assigned by the school leadership.

Key roles and responsibilities include but are not limited to the above. There may be times when school leaders need to request your help with other duties.

Requirements

  • The teacher must possess a recognized qualification in early childhood education, child development, or other related fields.
  • A commitment to the best interest of young children, love, and care of young children.
  • A warm and friendly personality.
  • Sensitivity to the feelings and needs of others.
  • An ability to relate well to young children.
  • An ability to establish a positive and healthy relationship with parents and families.
  • Previous experience of working with a diverse group of young children and/or implementation of inquiry-based learning approach preferable.
