Position: Adjunct Faculty of Business / Hospitality and Leadership
Two-week course(s)

Location: SIPO Polytechnic in Shanghai, China

Courses to teach in Spring 2025:

Either one of the following, both of which will be instructed for 20 sophomore college students:

  • SHB 2000: Contemporary Leadership Behavior (3 credits)

In this course, students will examine the concepts of “effective leadership” by evaluating the roles and responsibilities of leaders as communicators and agents of change. This course will focus on various issues such as moral and ethical dimensions of leadership, interrelationships among individuals and organizations, problem-finding and problem-solving, and participatory decision-making. Additionally, this course will strongly focus on self-awareness and relatable conceptual frameworks for individual and personal constructs.

  • SHB 1200: Introduction to Hospitality and Event Business (3 credits)

This course examines the principles of the entertainment and hospitality industries. This course focuses on the applications of industry knowledge and exposes students to the fundamentals and best practices of hospitality, event, and entertainment management.

Dates: Each course will be taught as a two-week intensive. Dates available are between March 10-21; April 7-25; May 12-23; or June 9-20.

Duration and Options for Position: The spring 2025 semester is the current timeframe for which CUW is hiring. This position is on a semester-to-semester commitment basis. There will be one section for each of these courses. Each section will be offered approximately as a two-week intensive, with each course scheduled for four periods per weekday, M-F, between either 8:30-11:30am OR 1:00-3:55pm. To teach one of these courses, therefore, the candidate must be available for at least a half day every day, M-F, for two weeks. The days and times of the class remain open. Thus, flexibility exists to meet the needs of qualified candidates.

Description of Position: This is an adjunct faculty position for Concordia University Wisconsin (CUW). Students are in CUW’s joint degree program in Applied English/Sport & Hospitality Business at SIPO Polytechnic (SIPO, in Shanghai). The instructor is tasked with using CUW’s syllabus, texts, and materials to teach the content of the course while simultaneously raising these Chinese students' academic English levels in preparation for transferring to CUW for coursework there (in Mequon, Wisconsin). Preparation for any one of these courses would ideally begin at least one month prior to the course start date (see above).

Duties:

  • Instruct one section of SHB 2000 and/or SHB 1200
  • Complete and report student grades or assessments to CUW
  • Represent CUW to the students, staff, and faculty at the Chinese partner institution(s)
  • Frequently communicate with Concordia University administration, faculty, and staff to service the dual degree program students

Benefits

  • $3,500 USD per course section (3 credits)
    *This amount is higher than adjunct salary pay on campus in Mequon; part of this is meant to cover all or part of any necessary travel to/from the teaching site.
    *SIPO will provide nearby housing (a 15-minute walk from campus) for the entire period, as well as meals on the teaching days (on campus).

Requirements

  • MBA or other master's degree in Business;
  • Three years of experience teaching Business courses to college- or high school-aged students
  • Located in China during the Spring semester within at least one of the timeframes given
