Job Description

SmartShanghai is on the hunt for interns. We will teach you the dark arts of English language media, we will pay you, keep you air-conditioned during the day, and even let you out of the cage to play for 15 minutes every once in a while. Is it a deal?

The air-conditioning thing was just a joke. The cage thing is not. But seriously, what do we want?

We need a 3-six-month commitment but our weekly hours are flexible: 24 hours a week, spread over four days. You will work directly with the Pulitzer Prize-winning lifestyle journalists behind SmartShanghai, until they kick you out of the office to go do some important lifestyle reporting of your own. ARE BURGER DEALS STILL RELEVANT! TELL US DEAR INTERN!

You'll mainly be helping us out with the following:

  • Putting in juicy info, into the tech that powers SmartShanghai (Events, and Venues)
  • Research for articles, and general market research (put that on your CV!)
  • Giving us insights into the pulse of the city, espescially those media saavy Gen-Z types
  • And be an extra pair of eyes for the rigorous joys of copyediting

You'll receive a stipend of 3,000rmb per month. We also get occasional swag from people trying to influence our editorial direction. That usually goes to interns. Free goodies. Not to mention experience at one of Shanghai's largest English language publications.

So, what do you say? Wanna do it? Send an email here with your CV or a brief introduction to yourself through the form below.

  • Native English Speaker
  • Chinese capability preferred but not required.
  • Have a GREAT personality.

SmartShanghai has been the city's most useful English-language online city guide for more than 15 years. We write daily content and editorial on lifestyle news and events, we host Shanghai’s largest venue directory, the city’s best event listings; a popular housing platform; SmartTicket, our ticketing service; an online digital marketplace; and more. Our singular and (variously) irreverent editorial style and focus, along with our genuine love and passion for living in and writing about Shanghai, has set us apart over the years. We clearly label all our paid content and don't make our content decissions based upcon ad contracts. Thansk to all that our website and apps attract over 200k unique visitors every month (pre-covid), making us (probably) the most trafficked English online media in China. We are an international team of editors, photographers, designers and programmers, all dedicated to independence, honesty and editorial transparency.
