Where is it: Lune is on the fourth floor of 218 Xinle Lu at Donghu Lu. Lune's sign is right in between an expensive-looking hair salon and the No. 88 awesome shack.
You walk into 218 and there's this elevator -- the most comically small elevator you've ever seen, in fact. It's like a phone booth. It fits two people. You and a small, small friend get in that and hit "4".
What it is: A bar / lounge / live music venue run by the LOgO team, which is Taipei (owner, bar manger, guanxi, 1000-yard stare) and Maxime (creative director, event booker, Euro affability and hospitality).
The success of LOgO and a few other side ventures these past few years has left the team with money and motivation to expand into new terrain. They’re somewhat older now, and were looking to do some place more... "chill". Lune is more chill.
It's a nicer, darker lounge space, perhaps harkening back to the LOgO days of yore before they painted the walls white and let everyone have at them with sharpies. Lots of couch seating, a longer bar you can sit at, a stage for a live band (live jazz and jam bands planned), and a DJ booth at the back corner. Events and DJ'ed music is, on the whole, less whomp whomp and more "jazzy", "funky", "chill" (house, jazz, funk, down-beat, soul). Music fades into the background as opposed to being the primary focus.
It's open every day of the week, with the following ongoing weekly events: DJ B.O. doing rock / RnB (Wednesday), Jazzamar, in from the Bund, doing funk and house (Thursday), and the Acid Pony Club doing disco / nu disco / house (Friday). Saturdays are special one-offs, and Sundays are still being organized, although I'd expect them to make use of that stage. Look for Shanghai-based jazz players to be performing there in the future, and a few Expo-run off acts.
Atmosphere: Everything is patterns, geometric designs, mosaics, and things. Squares, stripes, polka dots. That's what you're looking at. Feel is "cozy and comfortable". Good for groups of friends of after-dinner drinks. It's not excessively mature but it's not a Xinle Lu piss-fest.
Damage: Drink are slightly more expensive -- think LOgO + 10rmb or so. But market standard.
Who's going: Much to the dismay of the actual neighbours to the place, LOgO is very much a neighbourhood bar. That little area of town has flourished over the years with bars of a similar ilk -- C's, Dada, Anar -- catering to a specific demographic of younger expats, many of whom happen to live in the area.
Lune is also trying to be a neighbourhood bar, appealing to expats that live in that area, but it's also as a bar / jazz venue / lounge for all the people who are going to Cantina Agave, Noodle Bull, el Willy, and all the Japanese restaurants . There's a lot of places to eat in that area, but not a lot of places for relaxed drinks after dinner if you want to get out of the restaurant.
Now there is.
