Chunfeng Songyue Lou is Shanghai’s oldest vegan restaurant, running since 1910 and still holding it down at the edge of Yu Garden. The first floor is canteen-style -- noodles, dumplings, steamed buns, pastries -- plus a few windows turning out bao and other grab-and-go snacks. Upstairs is where they serve the old-school mock-meat dishes, like pan-fried green beans, stir-fried mushrooms, hearty dumplings and noodles, and seasonal items like their vegetarian mooncakes. It’s simple, crowded, and a little chaotic, but for a glimpse of century-old Shanghai vegetarian cooking, this is still the place. Everything is strictly plant-based.
