Once known as “Shanghai’s first public garden,” Zhangyuan has been part of the city’s story for more than 140 years. The former late Qing-era garden has witnessed some of Shanghai’s earliest modern moments, from the first commercial electric light demonstration to early film screenings and public speeches by historical figures. After years of restoration, its preserved shikumen lanes are now home to a mix of fashion, dining, art, and cultural spaces. With the east section connecting directly to HKRI Taikoo Hui, Zhangyuan has become an easy stop for exploring Shanghai’s old-meets-new cityscape.
