Founded in 1996, Hong Wu Kung Fu Centre has been teaching traditional Chinese martial arts to Shanghai residents and visitors for nearly three decades. Located on Taikang Road in the former French Concession, the studio is within walking distance of Tianzifang, Fuxing Park, Xintiandi, and Line 9's Dapuqiao Station.
Led by founder and head instructor Zhang Yi, who has more than 25 years of teaching experience, the centre welcomes students of all ages and experience levels. Classes focus on developing physical fitness, coordination, discipline, confidence, and self-awareness through structured martial arts training.
Zhang Yi began studying Kung Fu at the age of seven and has spent most of his life practicing and teaching Chinese martial arts. His approach places equal emphasis on mental and physical development, encouraging students to build confidence through perseverance and consistent practice.
For Zhang, martial arts are not simply about combat skills. He views Kung Fu as a discipline that helps students understand their capabilities, develop self-control, and cultivate respect for others.

Hong Wu's Kung Fu programme is rooted in the Shaolin tradition and is suitable for beginners as well as experienced practitioners. Classes cover fundamental techniques including striking, kicking, blocking, sweeping, and stance work, while helping students improve strength, flexibility, endurance, balance, and focus.
Training combines dynamic movement with technical precision and introduces students to both the physical and philosophical aspects of traditional Chinese martial arts.
For those seeking a lower-impact practice, the centre also offers Tai Chi classes. Characterised by slow, flowing movements and controlled breathing, Tai Chi promotes balance, mobility, relaxation, and overall wellbeing. The practice can be adapted to different ages and fitness levels, making it accessible to a wide range of students.
Children's programmes are available for all ages and abilities. Classes are designed to develop coordination, concentration, confidence, flexibility, and physical fitness in a structured and supportive environment. Lessons also emphasize respect, discipline, and positive habits that extend beyond the training floor.
Private instruction is available for students who prefer more individualized guidance or wish to progress at their own pace.
Hong Wu Kung Fu Centre offers both group and private classes seven days a week, with sessions running from morning to evening. The studio is located on Taikang Road, approximately two minutes' walk from Dapuqiao Station (Line 9, Exit 1).
