Established in Sydney in 2008, Black Star Pastry is a coffee shop with high social media exposure worldwide. Their strawberry and watermelon cake is called "the most instagrammed cake" by New York Times. This first Shanghai location is perched on the crossroads of Yuyuan Lu and Anxi Lu, occupying two levels with a small cocktail bar and dedicated exhibition areas. The whole space features a silver-toned, minimalist design. While the first floor offers some communal tables for quick coffee and takeaways, the second floor is equipped with soft sofa chairs and larger space for people to hang out. Cake slices are 58rmb each, with a creative mix of different layers and textures. Servings are quite innovative, such as miso cheesecake. Of course, order of the day still goes to their iconic strawberry and watermelon cake, which has a balanced, indulging flavour crafted from fruit, cream, and pedals.
