The much-anticipated Shanghai Grand Opera House, designed by Snoetta, is set to open to the public in 2025 following its globally acclaimed design win in 2016. Situated within the Shanghai Expo Culture Park along the Huangpu Riverfront, the opera house, inspired by the traditional Chinese fan, promises to be a new cultural landmark for Shanghai. Spanning over 140,000 sq.m, the venue will feature three main opera halls with seating capacities of 2,000, 1,200, and 1,000, hosting both Chinese and Western operas. The building's design blends Chinese symbolism with a modern architectural narrative, highlighted by a grand spiraling staircase that leads visitors to a rooftop offering breathtaking views of the Huangpu River, Xuhui Riverfront, and the Pudong skyline. In addition to the performance halls, the venue will serve as a hub for art education, research, and exhibitions, with expansive glass curtain walls allowing natural views of the surrounding park. The nearest metro access is Line 7 at Houtan Station, with a 15-minute walk to the venue.
