Occupying a full city block just back from the Bund, Bund City Hall is the long-restored former Shanghai Municipal Council building, now reopened as a mixed-use complex with public access woven into its core. Completed in stages from the 1920s and left partially unfinished for decades, the neoclassical structure has been carefully refurbished and extended, with a central courtyard reopened as a pedestrian space linking offices, cultural venues, and a small amount of retail and dining. Key historic interiors are now accessible for the first time, while newer additions keep a deliberately restrained architectural language. It’s less a single destination than a gradually unfolding urban block, best explored by wandering rather than arriving with a fixed plan.
