Perched atop Xisheshan Hill in Sheshan National Forest Park, the Sheshan Astronomical Museum sits in the historic observatory that was once one of China’s earliest modern astronomy sites. The French-style building’s dome still houses a restored 40 cm double refracting telescope, one of Asia’s largest in its time. Inside, the displays are simple—old instruments, a few exhibition rooms, and archival materials—but it’s the surroundings that make the visit special. Next door, the Sheshan Marian Basilica adds a hilltop charm, and the forested paths around the area make it easy to spend a slow half-day wandering. Tickets are 12rmb.
