Located on the third floor of Power Station of Art, Espace Gabrielle Chanel is Shanghai’s new destination for anyone who likes books, art and quiet corners with a view. Created through a collaboration between PSA and Chanel, this 1,700-square-meter public library is the first in China dedicated to contemporary art and design, bringing together more than 50,000 books, audio materials and research resources covering art, architecture, design, literature and culture. Designed by Japanese architect Kazunari Sakamoto, the space transforms the former power station’s industrial interior into a flowing landscape of wooden platforms, ramps and bookshelves, where visitors can wander through different levels of reading areas, exhibition spaces and a riverside lounge overlooking the Huangpu. Beyond a traditional library, it also includes a theatre for performances, screenings and cultural events, as well as a design-focused exhibition area, creating a new public space where research, creativity and everyday browsing come together.
