Located in Baoshan, the gym feels more like a working factory than a polished commercial climbing space — with an open warehouse layout, industrial atmosphere, and even the sound of nearby workshops. The facilities are basic, and the lack of strong air conditioning can make summers especially tough, but the reward is some of the best rope climbing terrain in the city, including high walls and long routes that are hard to find elsewhere in Shanghai. Most rope routes require top-rope partners, with no auto-belays available, so coming with a climbing buddy is recommended. The routes are well-designed and focus more on technique, endurance, and strength rather than quick wins, making it a favorite among more serious climbers. One important update: the gym’s current lease expires at the end of October 2026 due to redevelopment plans around the area after the new metro line construction. The owner has said Climbing Factory will reopen at a new location, but for anyone who hasn’t visited yet, this may be the last chance to experience the original “factory” before it moves.
