SH Contemporary Art Fair 2015 -- Probably Not Going Down

Jul 9, 2015 | 11:21 Thu
Welp, kinda saw this coming after the fiasco last year. ARTINFO has obtained an email alleging that the 2015 edition of the BolognaFiere Shanghai International Contemporary Art Exhibition a.k.a. SH Contemporary, is canceled this year. From them:

"The fair has previously gone on a two-year hiatus following the 2008 market crash. This year’s alleged cancellation, however, follows the rocky 2014 edition, which was hampered by government censors, a curatorial departure, and an issue with the event’s commercial license. The latter situation resulted in an unusual compromise involving official sponsorship of the event by the Italian Ministry of Culture, which disqualified the possibility of sales. (“At least this puts a bullet in the fair,” one Shanghai gallery director told Artnet of the arrangement.)" They also say that officials from the fair have not responded to emails regarding the situation.

Not really a surprise. The fair has also been losing money for years. Good news is, the younger, better ART021 is still on for November in the same space, the Shanghai Exhibition Center. Stay tuned.
