If you've ever spent an afternoon at the IKEA Baoshan, here's a bummer: the city's biggest store, once Asia's largest, is shutting down on February 2, 2026. Other stores closing include locations in Guangzhou, Tianjin, Nantong, Xuzhou, Ningbo, and Harbin.
IKEA says you can still shop online, through its app, WeChat mini-program, or other nearby stores, but it's still weird to think the biggest IKEA in Shanghai won't be there anymore. The closures are part of IKEA China's move from big expansion to more targeted growth, with smaller stores opening in Beijing, Shenzhen, and Dongguan over the next couple of years. It probably also comes down to cost. Baoshan IKEA is massive, around 55,000 sqm, so keeping it running with rent, staff, and utilities must be a heavy load.
For locals, it's not just about furniture. Since it opened in 2013, Baoshan IKEA has been part of so many first jobs, student part-time memories, and weekend strolls. Who knows what will take over that massive building? Some are already hoping for another Costco.
These are the remaining stores:
