First International Patient Receives China’s New CAR-T Solid Tumor Therapy in Shanghai

A 59-year-old New Zealand patient has become the first international recipient of China’s newly approved CAR-T therapy for solid tumors at Jiahui International Cancer Center.

The world's first international patient to receive Satri-cel, the newly approved CAR-T therapy for solid tumors, has successfully completed leukapheresis at Jiahui International Cancer Center (JICC) in Shanghai, marking a historic milestone in making China's latest oncology innovations accessible to patients worldwide.

Currently approved exclusively in China, Satri-cel is the world's first CAR-T therapy for the treatment of a solid tumor. As one of China's leading international cancer centers, JICC is uniquely positioned to connect eligible patients from around the world with this groundbreaking treatment. Having already cared for CAR-T patients from across the globe, the center continues to play an important role in making China's most advanced cancer therapies accessible to international patients.

Patient Background

Josh, a 59-year-old man from New Zealand, was diagnosed with advanced gastroduodenal cancer. Despite undergoing standard treatment in his home country, his disease continued to progress.

Seeking Innovative Treatment

As conventional treatment options became increasingly limited, the patient began exploring innovative therapies available internationally. His search ultimately led him to China and Jiahui International Cancer Center, which he selected for its multidisciplinary oncology platform, comprehensive hospital capabilities and extensive experience in delivering advanced CAR-T therapies.

Pre-Treatment Testing and Evaluation

Following guidance from JICC, the patient first underwent biomarker testing in New Zealand. The results confirmed Claudin 18.2 positivity and HER2 negativity, meeting the eligibility criteria for Satri-cel therapy.

In late June, he travelled to Shanghai with his wife to begin treatment. After completing PET-CT imaging, multidisciplinary evaluation and treatment planning at JICC, he successfully underwent leukapheresis. His CAR-T cells have now entered the manufacturing process, with reinfusion planned approximately three weeks later.
